Jannat al-Baqi, The resting place of the righteous
Jannat al-Baqi is the main cemetery of Madinah and the oldest Islamic graveyard connected directly to the Prophet ﷺ and his companions.
The Prophet ﷺ chose this place as the burial ground for the believers of Madinah, and many of the earliest Muslims were laid to rest here during his lifetime. The Prophet ﷺ frequently visited Al-Baqi and made dua for its people. He taught that visiting graves softens the heart, reminds a person of the Hereafter, and encourages humility. Because of his connection to this place, Jannat al-Baqi holds a special rank in Islamic history.
Those buried in Al-Baqi include:
• Many wives of the Prophet ﷺ
• Several of his daughters
• His son Ibrahim
• His aunt Safiyyah RA and other close relatives
• Thousands of Sahabah
• Great scholars, leaders, and early Muslims from Madinah The third Caliph, Uthman ibn Affan RA, is also buried in the extended area of Al-Baqi where graves were later added as Madinah expanded.
Jannat al-Baqi is simple by design. There are no decorated tombs or structures, and no marked graves for individuals. This follows the Islamic principle of humility in burial, where all believers are equal in death.
For visitors, the purpose of standing at the edge of Al-Baqi is to reflect, make dua for those buried there, and remember that this is the resting place of people who lived with the Prophet ﷺ, learned from him, and carried the message of Islam to the world.
May Allah have mercy on all who rest in Al-Baqi, and may He allow us to visit with respect, understanding, and a heart that remembers the Hereafter.
