Masjid al-Nabawi was once surrounded by a very small settlement

It’s hard to imagine this when you stand here today, but Masjid al-Nabawi was once surrounded by a very small settlement. During the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ, Madinah was not a large city. It was a modest oasis community with scattered homes, simple structures, and open land in between.

There were no defined city limits, no dense urban blocks, and no vast built-up areas like we see today. The mosque itself began as a humble space made of mud walls and palm trunks, with the homes of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions directly attached to it. Masjid al-Nabawi was the heart of Madinah, but Madinah itself was physically small.

Over the centuries, the mosque expanded again and again to serve a growing Ummah. Successive generations preserved its sanctity while enlarging its footprint to accommodate millions of worshippers. Today, the mosque complex covers an area that exceeds the entire populated Madinah of the Prophet’s ﷺ time.

This comparison is not about architecture or size. It is about perspective. From a small masjid at the center of a quiet settlement to a sanctuary visited by people from every corner of the world, Masjid al-Nabawi reflects the growth of Islam itself. What began with sincerity and simplicity now welcomes millions, without losing its spiritual core.
